EXTRUDER--VDE
Caleva VDE benchtop Variable Density Extruder is designed for experimental
formulation applications and producing small to medium size batches. The VDE
extruder can be both an axial and a radial extruder depending on which extrusion
method is most effective.
The Variable Density Extruder is a novel design in that the extruder utilizes a
variable screen thickness in the axial configuration from 1mm to 12mm. Therefore
the extruder hole depth, for example, for any diameter extrudate can be between 1
and 12 mm in length.
Extrusion Density
The Density of the extrudate of any given diameter varies as a function of the extruder screen hole depth thus the name of the extruder Variable Density Extruder. This can offer several advantages depending on the end use of the product.
Screen Strength
The strength of an extruder screen is a function of several things but mostly the screen thickness. Most current screen extruders are approximately 1mm thick. The Caleva VDE Extruder is designed to utilize axial screens up to 12 mm in thickness and so as you increase the screen thickness the screen strength will go up considerably. The radial extruder screens used on the VDE machines are machined tubes so that they are much stronger than the conventional screens made from a drilled /rolled welded thin sheet stainless steel.
Extrudate Quality
The extrudate quality improves dramatically as the hole length to diameter increases and therefore density increases exhibiting smoother surfaces with less breaks and voids. If this extrudate is used for spheronization this then can lead to spheres that are very consistent in both their “roundness” and size distribution which usually results in higher usable yields.
Operating method
Material to be extruded is manually loaded into a top mounted feed tray. A centrally
driven, horizontally orientated, rotating single screw transports material from
the inlet to either a radial die or axially mounted screen where the materials are
extruded from the inside of the screen die outwards and then discharged .
Typical Capacity Range: 200 grams minimum batch size up to about 12 kilograms/
hr. (this is formulation dependant and not for, or during, continuous use).
